We’ve been told for many years that heart healthy foods are those low in fat and high in carbohydrates. We’ve been told that saturated fat causes high cholesterol and thereby increases risk for heart disease. We’ve been told to make sure we eat whole wheat products to increase the amount of fibre in our diets. We’ve been told to choose highly processed foods in the name of heart health. 

But since the guidelines have been in place, the world has continued to get fatter and sicker. The prevalence of heart disease in the UK has failed to decrease between 1980-2020, and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes has increased from 2.3 million in 1980 to 4.23 million today. It’s time to start questioning conventional nutrition ideas. 

Sugar is the direct cause of type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease. For the sake of our health, and hearts, we need to return to a whole foods approach to our nutrition. We need to focus on eating meats, vegetables and fats. Ditch any foods with a label and your body and mind will thank you!
