OCD & ATTENTION

Recent psychological research on the causes of Obsessive  Compulsive Disorder have proposed that a critical impairment in OCD may be the ability to flexibly and intentionally shift attention adaptively for some desired goal.

It is suggested that problems with cognitive flexibility may play a role in the symptoms and severity of OCD.  According to the research, individuals with diagnosed OCD are able to direct their attention intentionally, but have difficulty shifting attention to new, relevant stimuli and away from an extraneous stimuli (Chamberlain et al., 2006). This impairment has also been found to be significant in first-degree relatives of OCD patients compared to healthy controls.

Neuroimaging studies have extended this behavioural work on cognitive flexibility.  Without being too technical, parts of the brain appear to be significantly less activated in OCD patients in reversal learning-based tasks (Remijnse et al., 2006). Importantly, people with OCD make more mistakes when switching between tasks than non-OCD individuals, which has been tied to reduced activation of the dPFC, lateral OFC, ACC, and caudate in the brain (Gu et al., 2008). It is clear that struggling with changing thoughts & attention is part of OCD.  Challenging inflexibility and fixation thinking is important for your mental wellbeing &  healthy functioning. But on beautiful days like this I can really recharge. I took a day off with a good friend and went for a long hike through a forest, dunes and long stretch of beach. Most of the time it was just us and seemingly miles of beautiful raw nature.

My body is tired but I feel calm and grateful. I’m past the dissapointment, guilt and anger for being in this mess again. Right now I’m just patiently surviving. Waiting for the storm to pass. It always does. And I always survive.

There comes a point when your demons stop being demons. And what this taught me is that simply takes time.

When I stepped off the DC Metro onto my old campus, I felt that familiar rock on my chest. My eyes started darting around and I was just waiting to run into someone from past, which was the last thing I wanted. But as the hours went on, I got comfortable. I realized the past was just that: the past. I am not in the same place I was when I left this place. I was ready for this.

This weekend came with a lot of healing. I was able to enter spaces that I thought would trigger me, like the main dining commons on campus, and feel okay. No one was after me. I wasn’t depressed. I wasn’t stuck here. I was passing time with people who have shown that they still care about my wellbeing despite the fact that I’m not there anymore.

I did this. I worked hard to get to this headspace. I never thought I would be able to come back to DC, let alone practice healthy habits while I was there. I laughed. I enjoyed being outside. Yes, I avoided campus for the most part. But that’s because I knew I needed to take care of myself. I got to reconnect with old friends. I even had a surprise visit with my best friend in the entire world, who just so happened to be in DC this same weekend.

Overcoming trauma is hard. It’s gritty. It’s frightening. But this week I proved to myself that I could do it. I’ve made leaps and bounds in processing the worst of my traumas. Part of me thought this weekend was going to turn into catastrophe. But I didn’t let that happen. I learned a lot about myself, about what I’m capable of, by going on this short trip.

We all have the ability to face our demons. Choosing to do so is the hardest part. But we are all stronger than we know, not even aware of how extensive our abilities are. Take the leap.
