Mislabeled, mistreated, and misunderstood

Labels: The good, the bad, and the horribly wrong Part 6 post 8

Homework free zone Sorry – not sorry

Not all teachers understand or appreciate the social emotional impact for learning. We’re lucky that my son’s interventionist does. We’ve talked extensively about work outside of school. She was clear, there is zero need to carry on the school day at home.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mrs. H. Her advice saved us.

Homework in our house goes something like…

Sit down at the kitchen table. Pull out items needed from bookbag.

Talk about the day.

Grab a drink and then settle in to complete the assignment.

Stumble over the directions (if there are any). Bathroom break.

Sit back down at the table and look at assignment.

Decide pencil is not sharp enough and then go in search of sharpener.

Come back to the table and try the first problem.

Break lead. Sharpen pencil again.

Return to paper, temper or tears begin. He doesn’t understand what to do.

I show him an example. He argues that’s not how they are supposed to complete the problem.

I begin googling the internet for help because I was not taught the same methods now taught in school. The answers are the same, but how I work out the problem is apparently now wrong.

Meanwhile he is scavenging the kitchen for a snack.

Find promising video and we watch together.

He attempts but is still not clear. I’m confused too.

Search for another video as he sits with his head down on the table.
I’m stressed, he’s stressed.
Find another video and we try again. He gets the first one or two completed then the third has a new element. Begin process all over again.

Nope! Pass.
