Mislabeled, mistreated, and misunderstood

Labels: The good, the bad, and the horribly wrong Part 6 post 7

By some stroke of luck, my curiosity and need to understand won out over my knee-jerk anger and I’m so grateful it did. I’ve cultivated a relationship with my son’s interventionist.

It turns out her daughter also has dyslexia. She’s one of us fighting on the front lines. The woman helping my son overcome his challenges understands both the parent and educator points of view. She has been an incredible resource and support.

She has helped me understand my son’s specific needs and weigh the pros and cons of different tools. Without her honest feedback I would have made many (more) mistakes.

Patiently she has reviewed his results and explained what they really mean. She’s met with me outside of IEP meetings to answer a myriad of questions never once acting as though I were an imposition.

This woman knows my son in a way that I don’t. I value her opinion. I love the stories about him in the classroom she shares with me.

But what I love most about his interventionist is that she was open and honest with me. She shared her personal story of discovering her own child was dyslexic. You know what? It sounded just like the rest of ours. It was frustrating, confusing, and hard.
It’s her honesty and humanity that I trust, it’s what lets me know she’s got our backs, but most importantly it proves that she understands my son. She’s more than earned her spot in our circle.
