(On Courtship or Company-Keeping)
A Christian young woman ought to know what is allowed and what is forbidden in regard to courtship. She ought not to wait to know this until she has deeply fallen in love, and perhaps even made improper proposals. In this case, the eye of the conscience would be dimmed; it would be impossible for her to judge aright.
Therefore I say to you, before entering upon any courtship learn what is the right view to be taken in regard to company-keeping. But what is this right view? We can say that there is nothing wrong in courtship when it is a necessary PRELIMINARY FOR MARRIAGE. But how many courtships are there which fulfill these conditions, and which do not appear dangerous and even sinful?
Father Schuen says; ‘In itself, there is nothing wrong in keeping-company, but the time and other attendant circumstances very frequently convert it into a proximate occasion of sin, and that it can become very wrong. Love-affairs are frequently very lightly entered into; but they are often attended by dangers and sad consequences.’
It is right and reasonable for two persons who intend to get married to previously become acquainted with each other. In fact, ordinary prudence and the future happiness of the two demand as much. If they meet at times, provided they do not remain alone too much and especially at night, and then enter into the married state in a proper and legitimate manner, such acquaintance cannot be found fault with. .
