.
.
.
Do you eat bread? Or do you listen to it? .
.
.
.
I do both! Today, I am listening to Bread. This is a classic progressive rock album called Guitar Man. I liked the name of this song so I chose it for the video. “Welcome To The Music” starts off the album with some funky drums, as the group goes on to sing about rock ‘n’ roll stardom. My favorite lyrics are “Carnegie Hall’s better than those honky-tonk bars”. .

What do you think? Do you prefer going to see a band in a nicer, more “proper” venue? Or would you prefer to get closer to the music and more down and dirty at your favorite local bar? Let me know in the comments and we’ll start the discussion! .
.Bernard Blanc - Bernard Blanc
.
.
.

.Donald Byrd - Fancy Free
.
.
.
This might be one of the most minimalistic jazz albums with a sizable ensemble behind the booth. Donald Byrd places an offering at the altar of jazz-fusion music, also known as jazz-rock fusion. This is a genre that is as revered as it is despised by jazz cats the world over. .
.
.
.
.
I myself do not consider my own tastes in the category of “jazz purist”, and I am drawn to this album. I am more familiar with jazz-fusion in the form of the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s stellar album The Inner Mounting Flame and the live version of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, both of which are landmark albums in the genre. I only say the statement above because I’ve heard from many of my past jazz professors and private lesson teachers that jazz-fusion is “horrible” or “terrible”, and I always respectfully disagreed. .
.
.
.
This album takes as much influence from James Brown, Sly and The Family Stone and Earth, Wind and Fire as it does from bebop masters Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. The sound on this album is organic and also highly intellectual. Makes sense, as Donald Byrd was always looking forward to what was next in the music game. .
.
.
.
If you think that this album is reminiscent of the smooth sounds of hip-hop, you would be on point. Byrd was a supporter of the rising hip-hop movement to follow a decade after the release of Fancy Free. He played an integral part in the recording of Guru’s Jazzmatazz album series. Songs from Fancy Free are among the most sampled in the history of the genre. Byrd was always one to support hip-hop and sampling culture. In his words, “I knew that something new was getting ready to jump off.”

Nirvana - Nevermind
.
.
.
“Let’s start this off without any words” .
.
.
.
Words from the now-immortal @kurtcobain Kurt Cobain. He has always been a figure who intrigued me. He reached success purposefully, yet was not able to find happiness within it. He took many deliberate steps out of love, yet was not able to give enough to himself. .
.
Cobain’s lyric writing style blends with the anger that the rest of his @nirvana.official.band Nirvana bandmates channeled through their instruments. I did start this video off with a segment from the vinyl without words, and then used the quote above as the first words heard. The opening music is quite angry! However, Kurt’s lyrics were often just collections of phrases he thought sounded cool but didn’t necessarily assign them much meaning during his writing process. The lyrics of the classic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” exemplify this to the T. Together, you c an dissect a million possible meanings. Yet, alone, each line kind of is just that...something that Kurt thought of that sounded cool. .
.
.
This record is from a @target Target store from Sandy Springs, Georgia, which is right outside of Atlanta. .
.
.
I am curious, though: at what times do you start something off without any words? .Max Weltman - Tears of Wine Slo-Mo
.
.
.
If I was overusing the iPhone’s Slo-Mo feature, you’d tell me, right? .
.
.
.
I just love it though! It is such a simple change - but it can transform something ordinary into extraordinary! It also gives you a cool perspective on things as it allows you to view the real movement of what’s in the video rather than the blur that our naked eye can give. .
.
.
.
I wouldn’t release this song in final form in slo-mo...but I have to say that I’m really loving the way these videos came out! Make sure you check out all three sections! In jazz, we would refer to them as the A Section, the B Section, and the C Section (also called the bridge) - just like in poetry. .Mont De Sundua/Month Of Sundays .
.
.
If you are a fan of @mymorningjacket My Morning Jacket, give this post a like and a thumbs up! 👍🏻 I remember the first time I discovered and listened to My Morning Jacket. It was after reading about them in @rollingstone Rolling Stone magazine. I used to use that magazine and other publications to stay up-to-date in the music world when I was a young teenager. @removador Jim James, also known as Yim Yames, is nowadays best know for being the chief songwriter, vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the incredible collective My Morning Jacket. This album, which I at the extraordinary underground (literally) record shop in Burlington, Vermont @purepopvt Pure Pop Records, shows a side of the singer that does not come out in his later work. .
.
.
.
Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, Jim James was steeped in a rich musical history. The influences on this Mont De Sundua album are varied, yet clear upon listening. He liked a lot of punk music, but also more Americana styles of music such as country. There are lyrics on this album about “getting fucked in the ass” and other subjects that are common in the hardcore punk scene. I thought this was surprising, and funny, given the thoughtful and insightful nature that the lyrics and vibe of My Morning Jacket that brought them to fame. .
.
.
.
This album was recorded in the late 90’s, but was not released for about 10 years after the recording! When it is not held up in direct comparison to his later work, this album does stand strong on its own. There are many long sections where the band is just jamming on a vibe and having fun with the music. Jim James also screams a lot as part of his vocals, which he does not do in the same fashion in his material with My Morning Jacket. .
.
.
What do you think of this excerpt? Do you prefer it to Jim James’ later material, or are you now intrigued in his early stuff?

.Pharoahe Monch - P.T.S.D. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
.
.
.
Hot bars and mental health are not always put in the same box. Today I am posting hip-hop albums that defy that notion, and still manage to be standout albums in the history of the genre. This album is one that I got on the release date (not in vinyl though!) and have been listening to ever since. It made a huge impact on me as a listener of hip-hop and an artist myself about what can be possible in terms of conceptual lyrical storytelling. .
.
.
.
@pharoahemonch Pharoahe Monch is a master of the mic and a beast of a creative MC. He bodies every verse he spits and there re no exceptions to that. This album hits hard both sonically and conceptually. He tells a story through his own bars and guest verses about the suffocating effect that following society’s standards can have. I posted a clip of the album’s opening song, “The Recollection Facility”. There is a similar concept here as there is in the movie “The Matrix”; mention of those in control pulling strings because they feed off of our sadness and profit from our self-destruction. .
.
.
.
The album ends hopeful, and that is heard even in the instrumental. Here is a man who is not afraid to say what is really on his mind after decades of grinding it out as an underground hip-hop artist. He was just talented enough to sift those thoughts into stories and make them rhyme in rhythm to a beat. .
.

What action are you going to take today or this week to ensure you get one step closer to your ideal future?Self-Destructive Behaviors .
.
.
Habits are developed all throughout our life. It takes many deliberate repetitions to either make or break a habit. I have engaged in self-destructive behaviors since I was a small child. I used to twirl and twist the hair at the top of my head and pull it out when I was very young. .
.
.
However, I remember doing it consciously many times - it wasn’t like it was some automatic behavior that I had no control over, even at such a young age. Shortly after, I began biting my fingernails. This was a bad habit. So many bad tasting liquids were put on my nails. I hated the taste, but I figured out that I could suck it off and then I’d be able to continue the biting. I would bite my nails DEEP. What still gets me to this day is that I suffered through these behaviors - they did not feel good even for a second! What finally got me to stop biting my nails was when I had braces put on my teeth, which I had for about 3 years. I was physically unable to. .
.
.
.
I thought that after my braces were removed, I would be “cured”. Nope. I began biting my cuticles and the skin around my fingers. This I do quite enthusiastically at times and can end up with all 10 fingers ripped up and bloody if I don’t stop myself. I haven’t seen all of my fingers “clean” for years - I think since I had braces. What you see in the photo is NOTHING. It may look bad to some people, but that is a good day for my fingers - sadly. I despise this ugly habit of mine, yet I don’t speak about it all that much. If I do, it’s usually in retaliation to someone just telling me to stop. I am hoping that by sharing it on a public platform, it will release some of my inner desire to engage in the behavior. I have researched the condition, and it is called dermatophagia. .
.
.
.
I of course want all of you to chime in on this! Do you have any advice? Do you engage in any self-deprecating behavior, or have you or someone you know successfully reversed a destructive habit?

.Vinyl Homework!
.
.
.
Here is the current #stackofwax that I have to do write-ups for. Owning vinyls is fun, and growing my social media account is fun - but nobody said it wasn’t work! 😂
.
.
.
.
At least it is work that I love doing. I always start with the write-ups where I have to do the least amount of thinking, before moving on to the tougher ones where I have to do some research or be extra creative! Also, the stack has grown since I took the photo 😱😱
