![[👾🎤📖]🎸🏹🤸🏼♂️🌈This wk, on the show, DnD alignments of The Rocketeer characters, and today, chaotic good. Cliff Secord in the film, played by Billy Campbell, is a bit different from Cliff in the comic, where he is more hot headed and prickly. Either way, though, he’s a relatable Everyman just trying his best and often coming up short. His intentions are good, but ... something along the way, things waylaid, and it all goes south. There’s a scene in the movie where he infiltrates a club, dresses as a waiter, and delivers a message to his girlfriend who is having dinner with the enemy of the film, Neville Sinclair. In the process of doing so, he spills soup on the table and water on Jenny. He does this little thing with the flowers on the table in an attempt to look natural that always cracks me up, trying to make them look better but only making himself look more awkward in the process. Such a gem. When I was rewatching the film for the first time in a long time as an adult, at that scene, I recall thinking to myself, “that’s Logan!” since that is exactly the sort of shenanigan Logan would try to pull off. It goes without saying that the way Cliff was portrayed, particular in the movie, influenced my writing of Logan from The Thirteenth Hour. They’re both good-natured people at heart who get by in life with a combination of pluck, luck, and good, old-fashioned bumbling incompetence that favors those who are earnest, curious, and idealistic. I think it’s ironic but appropriate that the picture of Cliff here shows him with explosion going off behind him! (One that I’m sure he didn’t create in purpose.). I’m sure he was, but Dave Stevens should be proud of creating such a relatable character who despite his flaws, doesn’t hesitate to take responsibility and try to do the right thing in the end.⠀
