金柑画廊は、新山清の写真展「KONTAKT」を開催いたします。新山清が数多く残したコンタクトプリントからセレクトした約36点の6x6判のヴィンテージプリントを展示いたします。新山清（1911-1969）は戦前から戦後にかけて活動した写真家です。風景から人物まで、様々な作品を数多く残した新山清。真摯に自由に写真を撮り続けた彼の作品は、"Subjektive Fotographie"（主観主義写真）を提唱したドイツ人写真家のオットー・シュタイナートによって広く世界に知らしめられ、国内外で評価されています。ご子息である新山洋一氏曰く、撮影はもちろん暗室作業にも大変熱心に取り組まれていたそうです。コンタクトプリントとは、現像したフィルムを印画紙に密着（コンタクト）させて原寸プリントしたもの。自身の手で一枚一枚丁寧に焼いたコンタクトプリントが数多く残っていることからも、暗室作業への情熱が見てとれます。写真をトリミングした痕跡も残っており、彼の写真に対するこだわりや美意識、作品制作のプロセスを垣間見ることができる貴重な資料でもあります。今回の展示に向けて制作した書籍「KONTAKT Kiyoshi Niiyama」の販売も予定しておりますので、この機会に是非お越しください。（太田京子｜金柑画廊）

「親父の写真、見てみる？」
と息子の洋一さんから誘われたのは、今から10年程前のことだろうか。
新山清という写真家の名前すら知らなかった僕は作品を一枚一枚を見ていくうちに、じんわりと新山清の世界に惹かれていった。そこには好きなものとじっくり向き合って写真をつくる純粋な喜びみたいなものが溢れていた。目を輝かせながら、楽しげに話す洋一さんの姿はさらに印象的で、当時自分の写真表現に試行錯誤していた僕は「ごちゃごちゃ考えてないで、好きな写真を撮ればいいんだよ」と新山親子に言われているようで、なんだか勝手に救われた気持ちになったのを憶えている。

新山清は戦前から1969年に亡くなるまで、周囲の評価や時代の風潮を気にせずに自分の撮りたいものだけを撮りたいように撮影し、暗室でもあらゆる手段を使用し自由に表現をしてきた写真家だった。
カメラは高価なものではなく、廉価なカメラを使用し、フィルムも決して無駄に使わずにバシャバシャと乱写することはなかったようだ。さまざまな対象をモチーフとはしているが、その中でも特に風景写真を数多く撮影した。
切り取る風景はどれも緻密に考えられており、その構図は「新山フレーミンング」とでも呼べるほど独自なもので見ているものにいつまでも飽きさせない不思議な魔力がある。
当時の写真雑誌で新山清はこうコメントしている。
「自分のからだにじかに感じる風景の内面的なものを写したい。そんな気持ちから私は作画行動をしているが、なかなか思うように写らないものである。引き伸ばしてみるたびに力の足りないのを痛感する。そして、風景のむずかしさにいささかへきえきしながら、風景への思慕はますます深くなっていく」

ここには新山清の写真に対する慎ましくも真摯な姿勢が伺える。新山清の写真が今見ても全く色褪せることなく映るのは、このような無垢な姿勢と視線が見る者の目や心までも純粋化させるからではないだろうか。(酒航太｜スタジオ35分）

新山清　Kiyoshi Niiyama

1911年愛媛県生まれ。東京電気専門学校卒業。1935年に理化学研究所に入社。パーレットカメラの同人会のメンバーとして写真家活動を開始し、作品を多くのサロンや国際的写真雑誌に発表。ロンドン・パリ・サロンで数点が入選、雑誌アメリカン・ポピュラーフォトグラフィー、フォトモンドのコンテストに入選。その後、全日本写真連盟や東京写真研究会での活動を通して日本のアマチュア写真家育成に携わる。1957年に旭光学に入社し、東京サービスセンター所長に就任。1969年5月逝去。
