This area ( and many others) was named in 1651 by two Italian astronomers, Francesco Grimaldi and Giovanni Battista Riccioli who illustrated and described features of celestial objects in their encyclopedia " Almagestum Novum", which for many centuries was the technical reference book for astronomers all over Europe.
