This is one of my favorite symbols; the Unalome is a symbol for the journey to enlightenment it reminds us that the path isn’t always straight, perfect or even the right direction. It shows us that the path to awakening are filled with missteps, lessons to learn and sometimes suffering.

The first time I came across this symbol is when I was researching different Sak Yant tattoos, a traditional sacred Thai Geometry art technology.

I was fortunate enough to find a traditional Sak Yant Monk artist in a temple not too far from Chiang Mai, Thailand where I got to participate in a khem sak ceremony.

The base of the symbol where the spiral is symbolizes the starting point of life the day you were born or the beginning of your spiritual awakening. The swirling lines above the spiral represents the lines that make out the majority of the image and indicates the path of your life as you begin to realize yourself. The straight line symbolizes becoming centered, wiser and closer to full realization, it can also symbolize maturity and understanding that comes with life experience.
Finally the dot at the very top of the line symbolizes reaching one’s goals, freedom, in full realization or enlightenment. Sometimes the Lotus is depicted instead of the dots (normally depicted at the top).
