If you want to lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit which means you eat less calories then your body burns eg if you burn 2500 calories through out the day and you only eat 2000 calories you will lose weight. 

To gain weight/ muscle you need to be in a calorie surplus which means eating more calories then you burn. When gaining muscle as well you will have to ensure you hit your protein target which is at least 1g of protein per pound of body weight.
