Last night I was busting out the tile on the hearth of our basement fireplace and it got me thinking of the remodel of our upstairs fireplace last year. It was badly in need of an update and I really wanted to take a stab at doing the mantel. I started out with an idea, to build it out of one piece of wood and to flip the edges so that it appears to be one thick piece, since I knew I wasn’t likely to find a 8-9 foot long, 3 inch thick slab of walnut! I did not have the skills nor the tools to do this at the time, so along the way I “had to” buy a new table saw, build an out feed table long enough to hold an 8 foot piece of wood, enlist the help of two veteran woodworkers for guidance and assistance, and think and rethink every measurement, decision, and idea along the way. I couldn’t be more proud of the result, and I often catch myself staring at it while watching tv. It took me 8 months to complete but will definitely last a generation or two. What projects have pushed your skills to new levels?
