I like this a lot, while Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are best known for their award winning work collaborations as actor/director , they have also collaborated as producers on the award winning WWII mini series such as “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific”. It seems they are reuniting again to produce another WWII mini series. They have signed up one of the best directors working right now in Emmy winner Cary Joji Fukunaga to direct a few episodes. Fukunaga is best known for directing the acclaimed first season of “True Detective”, the first Netflix original film “Beast of No Nation” and the upcoming “No Time To Die”, which was just delayed.

Fukunaga is going to work with Apple TV+, on a WWII epic series, “Masters of the Air”. He will direct the first three episodes in the hour long series. The series is expected to serve as a bit of a spiritual successor to Hanks and Spielbergs previous major WWII series, “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific”. This time, however, the series focuses on the US and British bomber pilots that brought the war to the German doorstep during the conflict.

Scale shouldn’t be much of an issue, of course, when you’re dealing with a reported budget of around $200 million for the 10-episode series. Apple is sparing no expense to bring “Masters of the Air” to life and if Fukunaga is helming three episodes, the only question remains who the producers will bring on for the other seven. I can’t wait to see who they get because these Hanks/Spielberg mini series usually attract some great directors.Filming is set to begin in March of next year.
