#OTD in 1854 the Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle occurred. Starting in a mill on the Gateshead riverbank it spread to neighbouring warehouses including one storing combustible chemicals. It exploded, sending debris into Newcastle which started even more fires. 53 people died.
