💉**ON TRAUMA IN MEDICINE** (4/4)

You may be wondering: so what is the solution?

1. On a personal level: Acknowledge when you need help. Ask questions. Think: this attending might think I’m dumb, but in the long run I want to be a better doctor.

2. On a macro level: there is this toxic mentality that we need to be able to do it all. Being a resident is a lot like being a woman, haha 🙃. You are expected to work 24 hr call shifts but somehow still have time for self care, stay hydrated and fed, be nice to consultants and nurses and patients, know everything about your patients, impress literally everyone, and never lose your cool. Yes it is impossible. But yet it seems like everyone is doing it somehow.

I have news for you: it is OK to not be able to do it. It is ok to have to take a break. It is ok to not know something on rounds. It’s ok to mess up once in a while. Actually, it is expected and normal.

This culture of “hey you just need to keep going, we all are” has been repeated to me in all directions but I finally decided to stand up for myself because nobody else would. When I asked for a break every 4 hrs. When I asked for less admissions so that I could go home before midnight. When I needed time off to go to therapy. I just needed some semblance of my self worth back, because it was being sucked out of me in the hospital.

If you are struggling, please ask for the accommodations you need. There is no shame in that. If you don’t know how to ask, please reach out to me 💛🧡❤️
