•Child I by Steve Tasane•

I think that I, like many others I’m sure, find it hard to put ourselves in the shoes of others when our lives are so incredibly different. You can see horror stories on the news but as much as you empathise it can be difficult to really imagine what people are going through when you are lucky enough to not be going through these things yourself.

That is why reading is important.

Beyond reading the news, I urge you to read fiction about what is going on in the world as it is often based on fact. Child I tells the story of children in a refugee camp. The book is stripped bare of a cover just as the children are stripped from their names and their passports. If you’re wondering what the people desperate to get to our country are fleeing from, this could give you great insight. I found this in one of our Year 6 classrooms and I think if any of them had questions about the refugee crisis I would point them to this - clear, but not too graphic, heartbreaking but hopeful.

I truly believe we need to be more compassionate, more welcoming and empathise with anyone experiencing a life that is not your own.
