Moving to the top end of the @iwcwatches #portugieser collection, the featured watch is the IWC Portugieser Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph. The watch comes in 3 variations. A boutique edition in 18ct Armor gold, and two editions in platinum. The watches are powered by the calibre 89900. This movement is interesting because it has a tourbillon with a stop seconds function, a pallet fork and skeletonised escape wheel coated with Diamond Shell technology. This reduces friction and improves efficiency in the energy delivery to the balance wheel. There is also a Chronograph function and a retorgrade date function. Some may find the dial layout funny but I think that it suits the overall design very well. The 12 o’clock sub dial combines a very smart space saving elapsed hours and minutes. The sub dial is then balanced out by the large tourbillon aperture at 6 oclock. The quirk is the display of date placed on the left side of the dial taking away a need for a date window which would break the harmony of the dial in my opinion. The boutique edition comes in a blue dial with gold plated hands and the other two in a silver plated dial with rhodium plated hands or a blue dial with rhodium plated hands. It has a 68 hour power reserve, impressive with its array of complications. My choice would be the boutique edition with the red gold and a blue dial a winner for me. To be honest, you would be lucky to own any one as they are all limited to 50 pieces.
