My top five tools for making abstract art and how I use them (from left to right):
.
1) a pencil. Not just for sketching but for making abstract lines, marks and designs. The darker (softer) the pencil, the better for layering on paint.
.
2) an old horsehair paintbrush, not even sure where it came from! I use this for making paint splatters and squeezing paint blobs onto the canvas.
.
3) my favourite ever flatbrush, 1 inch. I use this for blending and applying even layers of paint. I create bottom layers of colour washes with this, and I create abstract shapes as well.
.
4) my water spray bottle. I usually use this on the loosest setting possible to create a spray. I spray this on very wet, fluid acrylics to create drips. I also spray it lightly on nearly dry paint, let it sit for a moment, and then soak it up with a towel to remove a layer of paint to reveal what’s underneath.
.
5) my palette knife. For thicker, heavy body paints, I lay down colours that don’t blend entirely, creating depth and texture. For thin washes of paint, I remove paint to show layers underneath.
