I began this piece prior to the unrest that began in response to the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many others. I support the protests and have supported the Black Lives Matter movement since its inception in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer in 2013. We need to help the organizations on the front-lines of fighting for civil rights for people of color, in particular for black people who are disportionately harmed by the U.S. criminal justice system.
