In today’s #knowyourartist post, we are looking at the illustrious artist, Jogen Chowdhury.

Born in Bengal, Jogen Chowdhury graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, in 1960. In 1965, he was awarded a scholarship from the French government to study at Ecole des Beaux Art and Atelier 17, Paris. He began his artistic practice by working in pen-and-ink, experimenting with criss-cross patterns, before including pastels in his choice of medium. Chowdhury’s subjects include male and female figures- sometimes presented as a couple, sometimes in solitude- and depiction of flowers, creepers, fish, and still-life studies amongst others. The artist’s figurative steers away from realism, rendered in simple forms outlined by thick black outlines.
