I just found out that a boy from my ocean hometown took his life last week. This happens every year. This boy was beautiful and incredibly talented and I managed to wrangle one date with him when I was 16 years old. He treated me so kindly. We went to a party at an older girl’s house, I was nervous because she was popular and scary but they all loved him and he never left my side for a second, did nothing but make me feel comfortable and included. He was a perfect gentleman. I was so enamoured with him. Nothing became of it, I went away for the summer and he went off to university, and he was a bit out of my league anyway to be fair. I only saw him maybe a handful of times after that. When these things happen, I jump back in time. I see my 16 year old self, in my tight little khakis, beaming on his arm. I see his sparkling, laughing eyes, while a narrator whispers in my ear... At 36 years old this beautiful boy, beloved by all, will take his own life. It’s so overwhelmingly sad. My heart is heavy today. We need to do better for our boys. I don’t know how but we do. 💔
