Notice how you feel using art materials - which ones are you drawn to? A loose paint that allows for mess or a pencil with no eraser? How do you use the material? Do you use a lot of pressure and almost rip through the page, or are you hesitant to make any significant marks? The rhythms of our use of art materials reflect our attachment to other objects in the world - including people. Through art we can let go of judgment and reflectively process the ways we are inclined to interact. This gives us information about areas of strength and areas for growth in regards to our attachment style, preferred modes of communication, and internalized patterns of behavior. Continuing to work with art materials - exposing ourselves to the ones we are not inclined to, attempting to work with less pressure to see what it feels like, working on a large canvas and making bold marks - whatever the practice may be, can be a method for safely exploring other ways of relating.
