Ala Kol Lake lies on the path of a favorite track from Karakol to Altyn-Arashan at an altitude of 3532 meters above sea level. Usually, this is the place for the first night on the road from Altyn Arashan to Jeti Oguz, but only in the summer months. Although this route is considered the most popular, it is far from the easiest. The lake lies in a desert valley surrounded by cliffs and peaks of Terskey Ala Too. Stony trails and rocky screes lead to it. The lake is 2.3 km long and 700 meters wide, making it the largest lake among 729 lakes in the Issyk-Kul basin. The depth of the lake is not known, it is not mentioned in any of the directories, however, the encyclopedia of Kyrgyzstan says that the volume of water in the lake is 4.3 million cubic meters. The crystal clear water of the lake is fed by glacial streams, and the outflow forms a waterfall. The lake freezes in October and thaws in May.
