What is Sway Back Posture?⠀
The spine normally curves at the neck, the torso and the lower back area. This positions the head over the pelvis naturally. The curves also work as shock absorbers, distributing the stress that occurs during movement.⠀
When the spine curves too far inward, the condition is called lordosis or swayback.⠀
Following the arched back posture and the flat back posture, the third most common incorrect posture leading to low back pain is the sway back posture. ⠀
The sway back posture — casually known as the ‘lazy posture’, is identified by shoulders and chest leaning backwards, with hips turned in and pelvis and chin thrust forward. This can lead to excess pressure on the spine, causing pain and discomfort. It can affect your ability to move if it’s severe and left untreated. ⠀
Lordosis in the lower back, or lumbar spine, is the most common type. The easiest way to check for this condition is to lie on your back on a flat surface. You should be able to slide your hand under your lower back, with little space to spare.⠀
Someone with lordosis will have extra space between their back and the surface. If they have an extreme curve, there’ll be a visible C-like arch when they stand. And from the side view, their abdomen and buttocks will stick out.⠀
This could arise from faulty habitual postures and weakened muscles. eg Over-active/tight hamstrings, ligament laxity, incorrect strategy for good posture, bad habits such as sleeping on your stomach and poor posture in sitting. Swayback involves:⠀
Lengthening of:⠀
•Erector spinae in the upper thoracic and upper lumbar part,⠀
•Scapulae stabilisers (serratus anterior, lower and middle part of trapezius and rhomboid muscles),⠀
•Abdominal muscles (their lower part), and⠀
•One-joint (iliacus, psoas), and two-joint hip flexors (rectus femoris, tensor fascia latae)⠀
Shortening of muscles below that all show hyperactivity:⠀
•Suboccipital, sternocleidomastoid, scaleni, muscles (all show hyperacivity)⠀
•Chest muscles—pectoralis major and minor (all show hyperactivity)⠀
•Erector spinae lumbar part (lower part),⠀
•Upper fibers of abdominal muscles,⠀
•	luteus maximus⠀
Hamstrings (show hyperactivity)*
