“Why are you wearing that? Everyone knows boys get sad, you don’t have to shout about it,” were the words uttered to me by an elderly gentleman who had made his way over to the other side of the pub to start an argument with me about how men should “man up” and how it “wasn’t like this is my day”. Luckily, I’m stubborn and will never be told what I can and cannot wear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My response? “Well clearly not enough people know and understand it, otherwise I wouldn’t have to wear this.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3/4 of deaths by suicide are male. This is the most common cause of death for men under 49. If more people talked about the fact men can be vulnerable, perhaps the statistics would start to drop. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As someone who has lost a very important man to depression, it angers me when people try to confront me and tell me that men’s mental health is a myth. I don’t for one second believe that these people have never had a low point in their lives. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am proud to wear this sweater (amongst the many others I own) created by @boysgetsadtoostudio. If just one person sees me wearing it and finds solitude in the fact that they are not alone, that’s enough for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Guys, it’s okay not to be okay. And if anyone ever tells you to “man up”, give them the middle finger and walk away. They’re not worth your energy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
