Cedar Falls - Skin
================================= Somewhere back in the late 90’s my musical travels led me into forming a group with one of my dearest friends, collaboratrice Kate Dwyer, an incredibly gifted natural singer / songwriter and lyricist. Kate lived around the corner from me on Suffolk St, Downtown Manhattan and we would spend many an hour holed up in her apt or mine trading music ideas. Somewhere in between nipping to the bodega, eating huevos rancheros at the Mexican restaurant down the block and grabbing a slice at Two Boots Pizza, we ended up with a bunch of beautiful songs that we weren’t really sure what to do with. After trying to manage my own band, book my own gigs etc, I had become weary and had lost my taste for the downtown live circuit, but Kate was just finding hers, and after Cedar Falls, would go on to form the critically acclaimed band, The Savage Juliet. So, the compromise was that we’d record the best of what we’d composed and see if anything bit. We headed into Mike Kohler’s Goldenbug Studios on 13th Street and emerged some weeks later with a very lovely EP of tracks. Some were beautifully haunting like this one ‘Skin’ and others were heartfelt librettos ‘Saturn’ as well as the soulful chugger ‘Taste Of Pity’. Kate sang all of the leads, I played the guitars and did some backing vocals. Mike did the drums and programming and the three of us produced it together. So, that’s how Cedar Falls was born. Gordon Beefermann provided his very Mike Garson-esque piano flourishes. The cellist and the bass player’s names escape me unfortunately. Pic is by our friend Eric McNatt.
