When I/we travel, an important part has always been to try to learn about & if we’re lucky enough, to join in with the local communities, in which we are visiting. Sometimes it’s possible, sometimes it’s not but, it’s always nice to try to learn & respect different cultures.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ Although we did visit Mexico 🇲🇽 this trip, it was after #DiaDeLosMuertos had passed but while we were in LA, there were many #Mexican communities celebrating this special day. And we were lucky to have been able to experience it.⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ I had lots of fun & was able to get made up as a #CalaveraLaCatrina which is an iconic & joyous Mexican representation of death & celebration of life. It’s seen as a beautiful way of honouring loved ones as La Catarina is considered the Grand Dame of Death & rumoured to be a goddess.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ For those that don’t know, Día De Los Muertos, which is aka #DayofTheDead (& is often mistakenly confused as Mexican Halloween which it is NOT) is a special time from 31/10 - 2/11 (hence the confusion) where spirits of loved ones who have passed on can find their way back & spend quality time with the living. Family members of the deceased leave offerings & photos to guide their spirits back.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ In Vietnamese & some Asian cultures, we have something similar called đám giỗ where celebrations are had on a loved ones death anniversary with offerings to guide them home & celebrate their life. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ To learn more about Día De Los Muertos, the award winning Pixar animated film called Coco, is a great start! ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ↠ ✨What are some cool & unique things you’ve experienced to learn about a new culture esp. while travelling? ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ♻️ Red dress thrifted for $6.
