I’ve taught a variety of different classes and people. Without a doubt, core work is the number one thing I see people struggle with. They quit early, they lose engagement of the muscles...It doesn’t matter who it is. It’s not predominantly a woman thing and men are just stronger. Across the board, the core is massively neglected. And across the board, men and women, this part of the body is the area most people are ashamed of. Exposure of the stomach brings up a lot of emotions for people.
I’m not surprised. In the Yoga philosophy, the core is the seat of the third chakra which signifies our source of power, purpose, self-discipline and vitality. We are a culture that has lost these traits. We allow others to influence our core beliefs (yes, that’s right) because we have lost vision of what we stand for. We quit early when it’s hard. We fold under pressure. We have lost our self-esteem, our value. We cave into “being nice” because it’s what’s socially acceptable when we should be showing our teeth.
If you come to my classes, there’s a hefty amount of core work. Why? Because I could really careless if you have a beach body...but do care about you feeling empowered, stronger, confident and able. I believe that transformation happens with the core. From my kids/youth classes and yoga class to my own Personal training sessions and Total Body Fitness Classes, igniting your inner power is the highest goal. That’s what will make the difference. That’s how you’ll see the biggest change.
Today, I focused on the obliques and lower abs. While I believe a core should be strong, as a woman, I believe in also being shapely (defining those natural curves, ladies!)
