Why does the current Hollywood structure continue to feel the need to remake, reboot and reimagine just about every film franchise of the 1980s? Short answer is laziness and money. Financiers understand that by investing in recognizable IP they can exploit existing fan bases without having to spend marketing dollars creating new and original content. This type of investment tends to pay off in horror because the horror fan truly wants nothing more than to go into the new reboot, remake or reimagining and come out excited about a fresh new take on the material. We as fans don’t want these films to suck. We really don’t. But more often than not we come out less than satisfied. As for this reboot of Child’s Play my reaction is mixed. I applaud the creative team for taking chances, subverting expectations and at least attempting to build a Chucky world that fits in the digital age of today. It’s by no means as fresh, original and interesting as the original story but I did like the gruesome satire and somewhat campy tone of the film. I don’t see myself ever revisiting this but it’s definitely worth a watch a home if only for the ridiculous watermelon patch / garden tiller scene early on the film.
