I’m going to admit something to you – I hate Moby Dick. I have read excerpts of it several times…every single one was torture.
I have a theory as to why I hate this book. Want to hear it?
1. I hate fish.
2. The story line drags.
3. I’ve only picked up the story in the middle of the book and have never even thought about reading this huge novel all the way through.
It dawned on me one day that we read the Bible like I read Moby Dick. We stick to reading an excerpt, instead of considering the full story from Genesis to Revelation. In the end, we don’t understand what we read.
As Christians, we are supposed to like the Bible…right? We often react in one of two ways. We either ignore it. (Unpleasant things are much easier to do tomorrow.) Or, we read it quickly and assign a message we like instead of the actual message of the passage.
Neither option will work if we really want to know God.
Here’s the deal – all of the words in the Bible have been inspired by God. We cannot take any of them out of the context of the whole.
And that leads me to a question – when is the last time that you read the Bible as a whole? That section in the middle will be a lot easier to understand if you know where it fits into the whole story.
I have an idea – let’s plan together to read the Bible together in 90 days. Sound like a lot? It takes less time than watching a rerun of The Office. In only 30 minutes a day, you could gain a better understanding of who God is.
