OTD (1965) With tensions running high in the pennant race, Juan Marichal attacks catcher Johnny Roseboro with a bat after Roseboro buzzed his tower tossing the ball back to pitcher Sandy Koufax. Roseboro would need 14 stitches to close a gash on his head, and would miss the next two games. Marichal was suspended for eight game days (10 games because of doubleheaders) and fined a then-record $1,750 (which translates to about $15,000 today). Roseboro would sue Marichal for $110,000 in damages, and the case was eventually settled with Roseboro receiving $7,500.
