For today’s review of classic literature, I chose Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, one of my all-time favorite novels. (Fun fact: I’m actually fluent in French so the first time I read this novel it was the original French version). Les Miserable follows the struggles and encounters of several characters, immersing the reader in rich, dramatic storylines. The realism that Hugo brings to the novel is unmatched in modern literature.
What you can take away from this novel as a writer is how to craft stories that are based on real-life possibilities. Hugo’s inspiration for the novel came from an encounter he witnessed between three strangers( a thief and mother and daughter) and a police officer. After watching the incident Hugo began to imagine what their lives would be like if the thief was let go and the daughter was taken away from the mother. It has often been said that some of the best fiction comes from reality. So the next time you witness an interesting encounter try to think of all the possible ways you can turn it into a story!
