Though not written anywhere in the book, both Detective Long and Dubois are well in their fifties. They have worked together for many years in Lafayette Police Department, yet still call each other by their last names.
For this specific case they are working on, Long is the lead detective, whose job is to be skeptical and lose sleep over evidence and motives. Dubois, on the other hand, gets to be dry to her partner, and friendly & persuasive to those she needs to squeeze information from.
