Sharing some impressions of Prenzlauerberg in Berlin—a neighborhood in the city that reminds me much of Williamsburg in Brooklyn back in NYC. It is a neighborhood that is very “trendy” and “hipster”; during my stroll, I noticed an abundance of individual local coffee shops, cafes, stores, and other smaller businesses. Even though there is a kind of poetic “broken down” vibe that this place exudes, I have a feeling that the apartments and shops are anything but broken down; in fact, I believe you have to be of certain economic standing or privilege to live in this “artist village.” As much as I enjoyed taking a stroll through the neighborhood, I couldn’t help but notice the contrast between this place and the more culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods like Kreuzberg and also Neukölln (I did not visit the latter this time)—places that do not have the same appeal to tourists, but places that I found myself more interested in. In any case, from this short trip through Berlin, I couldn’t help but be critical (and I guess a little bit of a killjoy) instead of just admiring the beautiful balconies. I found myself more drawn to the vibrant colors, the graffiti everywhere, and the eclectic vibe. Have a nice day everyone! •
