Sailing Saturday! This is a mast block in a hollow mast for a small daysailer, a Lightening. This will provide support to the cleat and hardware that will be there. But why the interesting shape? A solid rectangular block has a hard edge that becomes a weak point when the mast flexes while sailing, and will be likely to fail there. By having tapered points on the block it eliminates that hard edge and keeps the mast strong.
