We visited the Cape Coast and Elmina Slave Castles, some of Africa’s most culturally significant historical sites. Here, the Portuguese (1482) and later the Swedes (1652) set up what is known to be the largest slave-trading center in West Africa. At the peak of slavery, it was here slaves were kept locked away and shipped off in herds irrevocably altering the lives of generations to come. The trans-Atlantic slave trade is known to be the largest movement of people in history with between 10 and 15 million Africans forcibly shipped across the Atlantic. It was powerful to be there this week, celebrating and thanking our ancestors during the Year of Return.
