About a week ago I received the audition materials for concert band at Ohio State. In total, I have 9 etudes/excerpts to play: An etude by composer Timothy Mahr, 6 standard orchestral excerpts, 1 excerpt from the first Bach cello suite (which has and will continue to kill me), and an excerpt from the famous wind band piece Lincolnshire Posy, which is featured (partially) in this video.
The first part of this excerpt is all stopped horn, which definitely has given me some trouble, but I’m also making progress. This part of the excerpt is very triumphant and forceful, and I still need to work on that style, as well as articulation and the accuracy of rhythm/long notes in the faster tempo. However, I like how I’m sounding right now, and I know I’m going to make a lot more progress.
This audition is definitely challenging, and I am going to have to put a lot of work into it, even when I’ve already played some of these excerpts previously. The audition is about a month away, but unfortunately I’m going on vacation in August, so I can’t practice for a week. But still, expect more practice videos to come!
