The Asian Jungle Scorpion (Heterometrus cyaneus) is a terrestrial scorpion originating from Laos and is a relatively large species of scorpion and can reach 3.5 – 5 inches when they are an adult. They are black all over with long, robust claws and a flat body.
They are quite an aggressive species of scorpion as it is quite nervous and will attack if provoked so experience of keeping arachnids is beneficial. This species do have quite strong claws which they can use to nip when agitated which can break the skin of the handler. They also do have a mildly venomous paralytic sting which they will use if not handled correctly though it will not harm a human.
Asian jungles scorpions should be kept at around 22 – 28 Degrees Celsius and require a humidity level of around 78 – 82% which can be achieved by spraying its bedding regularly with water. This species will live under bark and in burrows so a bedding such as coco fiber and lots of cork bark to enable it to hide and feel safe (which will also help prevent aggressiveness). A small 30×30 inch glass vivarium is ideal for this invert with plenty of ventilation. They do not require any lighting and a heat mat can be provided if temperature is too low and should be placed on the outside of the enclosure
Asian jungle scorpions will eat most insects such as crickets and locusts and should be provided with a shallow dish of bug gel to provide moisture. Adults will eat around 1 – 2 extra large insects a week
