To the Anishinaabeg, the East direction is significant as it is considered to be the beginning of all things. The sun rises in the east, bringing with it another new day. Waaponk translated means ‘in the direction of tomorrow’ and Waapononk refers to east.
Language preservation is important to Anishinaabeg and Pimachiowin Aki. We research and document stories, songs and geographical names to help preserve language, culture and the knowledge that is passed down through generations.
