Another small victory! Earlier we discussed NYC banning hair discrimination in the workplace back in March. On July 3, California officially became the first state to ban discrimination with their CROWN Act. NY joins Cali in barring racial discrimination based on natural hair and hairstyles like bantu knots, braids, twists and dreadlocks. On Friday July 12 (I knew this was a lucky day for a reason), Gov. Cuomo signed the bill amending the state’s Human Rights Law’s definition of race to include “traits historically associated with race, including but not limited to hair texture and protective hairstyles.” As per Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, “We should celebrate the diversity that makes New York State great and that includes respecting the hair style choices of ALL New Yorkers.” Two states down, more to go...
