Metz’s stops to find surf (and other things) in Tahiti, Australia, Europe & Africa lead to a chance meeting with John Whitmore in 1959 on a #CapeTown, South Africa beach—an event that’d change surfing and surf culture forever. ——————————————————— Metz landed on the Western Cape, after thousands of miles of hitchhiking, and was taken in by Whitmore, and family, on the back end of his ‘round the world’ tour (1958-1961). Upon returning home to Dana Point, California, he shared the news of this place and its potential for perfect surf with his friend & filmmaker Bruce Brown. The rest was, as they say, history as Bruce would return to #SouthAfrica to discover more surf breaks along this coastline.
