Ever since I was a child, my dream was to see the mighty Colosseum. The place which served as a place of entertainment for some, but a place of horror and death for others. The place of doom, or the place of redemption.
Entering trough, the so called “Death Gate” to the arena and trying to imagine how it could have felt to have been among approximately 60.000 people, who were hungry for violence, was a feeling that just cannot be put into words. *By the way originally arena did not mean a place for combat, it comes from Latin (arena or harena), meaning sand.
Sadly, we cannot see the Colosseum (originally called, the Flavian Amphitheatre, after the Roman Imperial dynasty) in its fullest glory due to earthquakes and stone-robbers. But you can see the reconstructed version of it in the following pictures.
The ground where you see all the bars and stairs used to be under the arena itself. It was the underground, called the hypogeum. That is where the animals and gladiators were held before the game began.
Famous battles, sea battles, myths, legends and hunts were also staged.
To be honest not only moments of history but the film called, Gladiator starring Russel Crowe can come to mind, hearing him say “Are you not entertained?!” Indeed, magnificent in structure, yet vicious in its past.
Having seen the Colosseum really made my dream come true.
