While many were celebrating Independence Day, minorities are still fighting for freedom rights. Last week, California proposed to ban discrimination against people based on their natural hairstyle and will be the first state to do so. “In a society in which hair has historically been one of many determining factors of a person’s race, and whether they were a second-class citizen, hair today remains a proxy for race,” the bill says. “Therefore, hair discrimination targeting hairstyles associated with race is racial discrimination.” The bill seeks to ban employers and schools from enforcing grooming policies that claim to be race neutral but in reality have a disproportionate impact on people of color. On July 3rd, Gov. Gavin Newsom officially signed this bill into law. New Jersey has started discussions this week. In March, we posted about NYC doing this with their no limitations clause in the workplace. It’s 2019 and women JUST received the right to wear their natural hair/crown (that grows from their very scalp) however they deem fit... think about that.
