It’s amazing how first impression can be completely wrong 🙈 .
Both of us has been living in Nice since 2013 and for both of us Ventimiglia (Nice’s closest big Italian neighbour) was just a first stop in Italy and a connection point. Looking out of the train window we always thought it was some unfriendly industrial town🏭 we couldn’t be more wrong 😄
.
So one day when we had couple of hours free before catching the next train, we decided to go and explore the town a bit. So imagine how surprised we were when we found out there’s more to Ventimiglia then just a train station 🚉 😝
.
Ventimiglia consists of two parts - the new and the old one. The new part (which was built only in the 19th century) has train station, traditional food and flower market, supermarkets, multiple public and private beaches and bottle shops popular amongst French, who would like to strike the deal on cigarettes and alcohol (as it’s much cheaper here). .
And across the river, on a hill, lies the old Ventimiglia, which was build in approx 2d century BC over the ruins of an ancient Roman city. Here you can find narrow cobbled streets, rustic houses peeling of its paint, artistically drying clothes along with all sorts of secret passageways, stairs, gaps, loopholes, and off course the spirit of the old days. .
The first time we got to the Ventimiglia Alta (the Upper Ventimiglia, as Italians call it) our eye caught the Cathedral, which is pretty much the centre of the old town located on a typical Italian square where you can see all the locals laundry hanging out 🥴 so Italian 🧖🏻‍♂️🇮🇹!!! .
The cathedral is built on the ruins of a Roman temple and is still the center of the religious life of Ventimiglia. It also has a baptistery and a crypt which you can visit absolutely for free👍🏻 love it! ⬇️⬇️⬇️
