Remembering the Yeltsin era. Or- Russia’s millennium chance. Following Mikhail Gorbatschow’s Perestroika and the fall of the iron courten across Europe, Boris Yeltsin became the first President of the Russian Federation, 1991 - 1999. Yeltsin was not very much respected in his own country due to his- at times very direct approach, his lifestyle and the fact that Russia‘s economy had declined. Drilling a little deeper I would insinuate Yeltsin a gift in scouting talent. I would envision him as a conductor- who sleepwalkingly selected the right talents - gesturing wildly as his orcestra perfectly played a Symphony. Yeltsin had no problem that Abramovitch and Khodorkovsky were Jews. He gave them a chance. Of all the Oligarchs Khodorkovsky was the Wunderkind. In a period of 8 years - Mikhail Khodorkovsky became the world’s youngest Billionaire and richest Russian. In 2003, the 7th richest man in the World. Worth to mention, in ‚03 Carlos Slim ranked at number 9 and 11 years later was the richest man in the world. At the speed of light- Khodorkovsky -who was internationally perceived as Russia‚s business Wizard- created a global network and found supporters in Bill Clinton, Bill Gates and many others. In the late 90’s Khodorkovsky started to promote the idea to transform Russia in a democracy and to open Russia for international Investors /progress. Clinton‘s request in return for /thinking 2-3 decades forward/ trillions of Dollars of US & international investments: Two sided denuclearization. Friendship. As soon as Putin took over he started to work on a against plan and to imprison Khodorkovsky. What did Putin change in terms of corruption? He impounded Khodorkovsky’s company and renamed it Rosneft, today Russia’s cash cow. Did he follow Lenin‘s model to share the treasuries between Russia‘s people? Why did Germany’s highly respected former minister of state, Hans-Dietrich Genscher fight for years for Khodorkovski‘s freedom?
