Yesterday at @citymproductions , we put out the official casting call for a character named Adrien Pierce (you can see it in this photo collection).
I want to talk about Adrien. I want you all to start to know her.
I’ve always been good at writing “bad guys”. Villains. Monsters. But cookie-cutter heroes, the light to balance the darkness, have always eluded me.
Adrien proved VERY hard to pin down. She started out as a villain, a cold blooded murderer. But the more I found out about her, the more I realized she wasn’t the monster. She WORKED for the monster, but not by choice. Her humanity had faded, sure, but I found it nonetheless.
And so slowly, but surely, over a full year of writing and re-writing, Adrien Pierce became the hero.
She’s not a good person, she’s not looking to “redeem” herself. But she’s done terrible things for the wrong cause, and she’s trying to escape. To start over.
I started to wonder what it was that held Adrien in the darkness. Adrien was like a dying star orbiting a massive black hole.
And one day, I realized that black hole had a name: Wöland.
He’s at the center of it all. The Woe Land Saga, the stories I’ve written, all of it.
And if Adrien ever wants to truly be free, she’s going to have to stop orbiting, hold her breath, and dive straight in.
Only time will tell if she will be crushed.
