OPENSHOP: Dublin as an Open Lab?
Saturday 18.05.19 (15:00 – 16:30)

Increasingly, residents are consulted on community development projects in their area. It makes sense; people who live in these areas use these spaces everyday, and are therefore the ones who experience what works and doesn’t work. But is it a meaningful process, or are developers and city councils merely paying lip service to community participation? How could it be done differently? And when it comes to private development, of hotels or apartments or retail units, do we still get a say? Should we? To create the communities they want to see, are residents better off initiating their own neighbourhood projects?

To discuss these questions, we will be joined by researcher and PhD candidate in geography Mary Broe (Maynooth University), architect Charlie Donnelly, and members of the Mud Island Community Garden in North Strand. You are invited to join mediators Clio Ryan and Joan Somers Donnelly in OPENSHOP to be part of the discussion, and to do some building of our own.

Featuring part of the stage set of the 2018 Dublin Fringe Festival show Everything Can Be Dismantled, designed by Stefania Elettra Pantavos and Joan Somers Donnelly.
