The star of the show in this grisaille still life is special to me. One of my favorite high school teachers gave this black pearl necklace to me as a graduation gift. As a young, trying-to- figure-herself-out teen, Mrs. Horton introduced me to to very important subjects (apart from English): the novel, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, & the idea of an intelligent woman with “class” aka: Audrey Hepburn. 😁
Now, a decade later, as a slightly older young woman...when I think about Holly Golightly, I see how Truman Capote captured the very spirit of (what could be) any young woman who finds herself unhappy in her own skin. Trying to do life her own way, do what’s best for “me”, what makes me happy, running from the heart of the matter, etc. & like most- if not all-I too have been there, wanting to put on some fashion-sense, smile, make my own decisions about “my life” & suffocate the fact of how I expect life experience and running to take me far from the Lula Mae Barnes I came from (all the while really knowing and proving over & over that it is impossible to escape oneself). So, why the long post, the still life painting of jewelry & the bit about Capote, and his novel, & inability yet want of escaping the messiness of oneself?

Well, today is Good Friday & I’ve been in thought about Jesus Christ.
I’m in thought about who He is, & what Good Friday is a remembrance & celebration of— The perfect & only Son of God, willfully & completely submitting to His Fathers will to be done, at the expense of His own comfort & life, for the sake of Gods glory & every man, woman, & child’s only hope to be saved from the righteous wrath that our inescapable sinful selves incur: death.
I cannot escape myself. I cannot escape my sin, the parts I hate about myself, or the truth of what I truly deserve at the end of my days. I earn death with my life & sin.
Not one person “deserves” heaven, or the eternal, costly grace, kindness and love of Jesus Christ. And yet, look at what He has done.
Jesus Christ can give me a new life. Jesus Christ can take the sin away.
Jesus Christ can give me what only He deserves, while taking on Himself what we all deserve.
This is a Good Friday.
