Last night’s Naboborsho dinner was at @ummraomumbai with my friends @euphorhea , @kurushdalal and @nonchalantgourmand . It had been a while since we met and to celebrate the new year and many new beginnings at a place that Nikhil swears by, seemed like the best idea. .
.
Ummrao specialises in Nawabi cuisine (not just Awadhi) and Chef Mukhtar Qureshi and his team put up a splendid show as they dish out one perfect dish after another. From the Kashmiri gucchi stuffed with couscous and ricotta, to the melt in the mouth nadru shaami, to those delicious bhagare baingan and creamy dal makhani, this was a meal to remember. Nik insisted that we try the Bhakumas, which is a sourdough roti that Ummrao specialises in. It was pillowy soft and so full of flavours that it could be had by itself. .
.
What I really like about Ummrao is the non-pretentious food and a place that serves you a meal that you’ll remember for a while. Usually when we go out with families, the choice is to go to a place that serves food sans drama and is true to its flavours. In the words of my family - “we don’t want food blogger food, asli khaana chaiye” and that’s where places like Ummrao step in, where they take you back to what family dining used to be like and what most people still want it to be. I know I am going there again, and again, and again. ❤️
