Having experimented with many medium over the years, her preferred ‘wearable art’ combinations are those of vintage and antique elements worked with semi precious or glass beads and old silver. Inspired by the art of other cultures, she might string, antique silver beads from the Turkoman of northern Afghanistan with 19thC Venetian trade beads. Alternatively, she’ll use her silversmithing skills to pair a vintage Bakelite dress clip or a contemporary Fordite cabochon with sterling silver to create a unique statement ring. Whether stringing antique beads, silversmithing or working with tiny seed beads, her statement pieces of art jewellery are one of a kind. Nancy’s interest and work in textiles began over 40 years ago. With a degree from the Textile Studio at Sheridan’s School of Art and Design, and extensive experience in weaving, dye chemistry, pattern drafting, fabric structure and surface design, Nancy fashions unique and useful purses, totes and pouches for casual dressing. Her work is all about ‘slow fashion’, where you can feel the hand of the maker. From her own hand printed fabrics, using block prints and silk screen techniques to the waxed canvas she uses, with a patina of aged leather, her purses are a beautiful testament to the respect for ‘making’ that started generations ago.
